Nepal's sidelined monarch issued a rare statement yesterday, calling for peace as the ethnically-tense south of the country entered the seventh day of a violent general strike.

King Gyanendra's call also came less than two months before crucial elections as part of the Himalayan nation's peace process, which are expected to result in the abolition of the monarchy.

"May we Nepalese achieve success in ensuring an environment wherein all can enjoy a just and equitable share of the dividends of democracy," Gyanendra said in a brief statement.

The statement marks Democracy Day, when Nepal commemorates the return to power in 1951 of Gyanendra's Shah dynasty after the impoverished country had been ruled for just over 100 years by hereditary prime ministers.

The King said this is a message to the nation. The King said there should be an environment all should to equally enjoy the benefits of democracy and called for a prosperous and successful Nepal. The King remembered his grandfather King Tribhuban, who helped usher in democracy in 2007; the government is trying to erase his contribution and memory while pushing a republic.
